Sorcerer Archetype: 'Spellsurge' (5e)
In the never-ending quest to obtain true power¸ most mages seek to control this world's magic...the Spellsurge seeks to set it free. *The Spellsurge archetype has gotten some updates! After a whole lot of seriously wonderful playtest feedback over the past couple months¸ I've added some balance adjustments to some of the Class Features¸ and tweaked some of the items on the Surge / Backfire Tables to prevent abuse. So give it a read¸ and give it a spin!* Designed as an archetype for the "Sorcerer" class in 5th Edition¸ this heavily-tested homebrew has a very unique feel amongst caster classes. The archetype is an arcane 'brute'¸ inspired by elements of the Barbarian¸ combined with a hint of Dragon Ball Z. Its features are built around raw power and embracing unpredictability¸ starkly contrasting the Wild Magic archetype that revolves around bending luck to change extant outcomes. It incorporates both a "Surge Table"--a more accessible version of the Wild Magic Table--along with a "Backfire Table" for a little extra crit-fail fun. Rather than trying to limit and control entropy¸ the Spellsurge thrives on it¸ giving the player fairly regular chances to create big payoffs or big problems for themselves and those around them. Either way¸ you and your friends will probably have a blast--or two or three. If you're a sorcerer who never gets to use his Wild Magic¸ a person looking for some fresh and fun unpredictability¸ a player longing to watch their character go Super Saiyan¸ or simply an agent of chaos¸ ask your doctor if "Spellsurge" is right for you. Odds are¸ it will be. Thanks so much¸ and hope you enjoy!
